Formula 1 Could Return to India in 2027
India's Ministry of Sports is actively working to reinstate the Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that the government is striving to remove all barriers that led to the Royal Races leaving the country back in 2013.
The Buddh International Circuit is expected to be acquired by the Adani Group conglomerate, which is highly interested in reviving the prestigious races. High taxes were the main issue last time. Currently, the government promises tax incentives or reimbursement mechanisms for organizers to make the project financially viable.
Due to military conflicts in the Middle East (which have already caused the cancellation of the Saudi Arabian and Bahrain Grands Prix), India is being considered a safe and promising alternative. Three different companies have already approached the government. The Motorsport Federation of India is actively negotiating with Formula 1 leadership, with the government acting as a mediator.
However, there are nuances: India has a complicated history with hosting major auto and motorsport events. For example, the MotoGP and Formula E rounds held in 2023 faced serious organizational and operational challenges (ranging from visa delays to staffing issues and extreme heat), which led to their removal from future calendars.
